Trending Samer Issawi on Twitter – what can make us effective?

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmail

Every day, activists gather on Twitter attempting to get a new hashtag for Samer Issawi and the other Palestinian hunger strikers to trend on the world trending list. Until now, this has only been marginally successful*. When compared to previous tweeting sprees such as those undertaken for Khader Adnan, we have a long way to go.

(editorial note Feb 11: for the past five consecutive days activists succeeded to get Issawi world trending every day , reminiscent of the success of the Khader Adnan trending sprees!)

In this blog, an attempt will be made to give participants some pointers which can help make these tweeting actions more effective. Considering the urgent situation of his medical condition, this is very much needed! Read this following post carefully, please.

TWEETING FOR SAMER – 10 tips to get it world trending

1. Wait till the hashtag is revealed, and tweet the EXACT hashtag (use copy/paste to avoid mistakes).

2. Make ORIGINAL tweets with it – retweets are NOT counted for trending by Twitter.

3. What you tweet doesnt matter for trending. Add the hashtag to every tweet, even if u are responding to someone else about a totally different subject.

4. Encourage celebrity pro-Palestine tweeps with lots of followers to JOIN. We have been missing them dearly these days !

5. Send as many tweets in as short a time as possible. Tweet short messages with the hashtag, also for speeding up the tweeting process.

6. Be ON TIME !! We need that massive explosion of tweets with that hashtag !

7. If the hashtag hasn’t trended after an hour, you can still keep sending tweets for Samer Issawi and the hunger strikers, but it becomes highly unlikely that it will still be able to cause a trend.

8. Be sure to tweet articles about Samer Issawi ! Open the article in a browser tab, and most websites have a tweet button. Just copy/paste the hashtag into the tweet. This works VERY fast.

9. Use ONLY ONE hashtag per tweet, or it doesn’t count towards trending. A tweet with 5 times the hashtag is useless, as is a tweet with any other hashtag added.

10. Tell all your friends to be there and JOIN !

EXPLANATION

In order to avoid having to explain everything through tweets, here is some background explanation as to what these tips are based on. The main thing to keep in mind is: hashtags get included on the basis of a complex algorithm that focuses on PEAKS. This means that when Twitter ‘sees’ large numbers of people tweeting the same hashtag simultaneously, the tweet becomes eligible for being listed – BUT only if this peak is maintained long enough.

The sudden ‘explosion’ of a certain NEW hashtag is essential to kickstart trending though, which is why tip #1 and tip # 5 and #6 are so essential. The algorithm doesn’t take RT’s into consideration, so focus on launching your own new tweets with the hashtag. As for sustaining the tweeting, if you have a short attention span, you can still be extremely helpful by adding the hashtag to every tweet you send while the trending action is ongoing (tip # 3) . With copy/paste, this should be extremely simple!

The reason why the hashtag isn’t revealed before its time, is that it may diminish the ‘sudden peak effect’ since it is impossible to instruct the crowds to keep it to themselves until the appointed time.

HASHTAGS:

@samerissawi1 and @Resistance48 are the ones who will reveal the new hashtag every day, and it gets revealed exactly at the time when tweeting starts. FOLLOW THEM especially when it’s tweeting time ! All you have to do is BE THERE ON TIME, and launch a barrage of tweets with the hashtag once you see it !

Probably, you are better connected to Palestinian and pro-Palestinian ‘celebrity tweeps’ than I am – please encourage them to participate, since they have the clout to get a lot of people tweeting a hashtag at the same time ! Please do your best to involve them by sending them messages, emails or tweets well before the tweeting action starts.

Tweet time every day is:
2pm EST/7 pm GMT/ 9pm Palestine time – please calculate what time that means for you, way before you start participating ! THIS TOOL SHOULD BE VERY HELPFUL with that.

That’s it ! What I really hope is that loads of you will join us today on Twitter. Let’s get Samer Issawi trending ! Please be on time !!
