In the West, when advocating the Palestinian cause, we are often told that public perception of the conflict has ‘come a long way’ in the direction of the Palestinians. This usually refers to the shift people made from believing in the Zionist myth of ‘a land without people for a people without land’, to accepting the Oslo-doctrine of the two-state solution.
It is difficult to disagree with this, but what has really been achieved? Basically it only means that Westerners seem to have discovered that Palestine was, after all, not a land without a people. What now seems like a painfully overdue observation, must have been a real eye-opener for them somewhere in the recent past.

It seems to have stopped raining in Lebanon. But as we hold our hands up in the air, to gauge if we can trust that it really has, and we gaze up at the sky, and see dark clouds still hanging there, many of us everywhere in the world feel that somehow, at some time - in fact at any time, it might start to rain again.
After the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, the atmosphere seems to have some similarities to that described above. The rain, of course, does not consist of drops of water, but of lethal American and Israeli missiles and bombs, with the destructive power we have now become all too familiar with, from seeing the effects of this high-tech weaponry first in Afghanistan, then in Iraq, then in Palestine, and recently in Lebanon.

Many organizations, from various countries in Europe, provided speakers, who spoke over a microphone to the crowd, gathered at the square of the Central Station. Among the speakers were representatives from various countries like France, Italy and the Netherlands, who spoke to a crowd waving predominantly Palestinian and Lebanese flags, and carrying slogans calling for an end to the killing.
The Palestinian Community in the Netherlands (PGN) was invited to provide a speaker at the demonstration. Below is the complete version of the speech, that was shortened considerably due to bad weather conditions and time shortage.

After Iraq and Palestine, yet another Arab country has become the stage of intensive bombing from high-tech weaponry, with warplanes smashing the vital organs of its infrastructure, and warships pounding its cities from the sea. Lebanon, not only a symbol of elegance and savoir-vivre in the Arab world, but also a source of pride for its spirit of resistance, has again become a war-zone, its recent history already scarred by decades of both internal strife and Israeli occupation.

When something that is an obvious reality is put up for discussion, it can often be a good reason to raise an eyebrow. A recent example of this can be seen in the dealings of the pro-Israeli propaganda machine with respect to the military onslaught on Gaza. While a skilfully orchestrated media apparatus endeavours to project Gilad Shalit into the minds of the public as an ordinary civilian, it also does its utmost to obscure the fact that when this Israeli soldier was captured, he was an active combatant on duty.
Since this is not an opinion, but a fact, should there be any discussion at all, about whether he is a prisoner of war, or a hostage?
