Last week, Maha Rahwanji featured Doc Jazz on her Arabic music show ‘Maha’s Music’, which regularly has Arabic musicians showcasing their music, and having a conversation with her as host of the show.

Maha Rahwanji is a Palestinian living in the United Kingdom and is well-known throughout the ranks of Palestine activism due to her active participation in all things Palestinian, and her prominent role in the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) over the years.

The one-hour show had Maha connecting to Doc Jazz in the United Arab Emirates, while listening to his Arabic songs: Al Jeel Al Jadeed, Falasteen (el 3alam), Naam Naam Habibi, Ala Dalona, 3al 3ain, and some mawaweel (improvisations) on the shibbabeh, the Palestinian flute.

Due to some technical problems in the Skype connection, the shows starts off mainly with the music, while attempting to keep Doc Jazz on the line, but after a few songs and the intervention of technical engineer Chris, the conversation finally takes hold.

Maha is obviously exhilarated and relieved when the technical issues have been resolved, and a very pleasant and cordial conversation ensues, in which Doc Jazz elaborates on his music, which instruments he plays, and how he learned to play them. He also explains the meaning of his songs and their purpose. Although the emphasis is mostly on the music, some political statements are inevitable, which is no surprise considering the Palestinian background of both the show host and Doc Jazz.

Towards the end of the show, Maha plays three Arabic songs chosen by Doc Jazz: Al Quds el Atiqa by Fairuz, Wein el Malayeen by Julia Boutros, and Masha’al by Rim Banna. Maha asks Doc Jazz for his reasons behind selecting these, and he explains his choices.

All in all, this was a lovely episode of Maha’s Music that fans of Doc Jazz definitely won’t want to miss. Many thanks to Maha Rahwanji for lending a chance to Doc Jazz to surf her airwaves! Check out the show by clicking here, or clicking on the player down below, and don’t forget to share!
