Samer IssawiRamallah – It has been decided that Jerusalemite political prisoner Samer Issawi, the man who waged the longest hunger strike ever, will be released tomorrow. This hunger strike, a victory over his jailers, enabled him to gain his freedom through the strength of his will. On this occasion, the Prisoners Club has released a report about the most remarkable predicaments that the prisoner went through, until his victory on April 23.

His imprisonment in 2012

Samer Issawi was imprisoned after his release in 2011, as a part of the prisoner exchange deal, after 10 years of incarceration. A few months after his release the occupation forces arrested him again on 7 July 2012, under the excuse that he had  attempted to enter the Al Ram region and had violated the terms of the agreement.

In the beginning of August 2012 he announced an open hunger strike, in protest against his renewed arrest, it being arbitrary and without any justification. During the hunger strike that Samer waged for his freedom, which lasted for 9 months and is considered to be the longest hunger strike in human history, a number of court sessions were held in the military court of Ofer prison, and in the Occupation Magistrates court in Jerusalem, which ended in a victory for him. The occupation authorities had demanded that his original sentence, of which 20 out of 30 years remained unserved, be reinstated. He had already spent 10 years of this sentence before he was released under the prisoner exchange deal.

Samer’s victory

Samer waged a long battle using only his intestines, in which he looked into the face of death and was transferred between various prisons and civilian hospitals. At the same time, a legal battle was being waged by counsellor Jawad Boulos, director of the legal unit of the Prisoners Club, The third concurrent battle was fought by his family, at the level of institutions, the legal system and the media. After these long battles Samer won on the 23rd of April, crushing a military law that stipulated that released prisoners should be rearrested for any violation whatsoever – even if it involved a mere traffic violation. Using every bit of his will power and determination, Samer was able to break the chains of his imprisonment.

Tomorrow, on December 23, Samer is slated to see the light of freedom after having faced death for over 9 consecutive months, during his struggle for freedom and justice.
